Frequently Asked Questions
How sick will I get from chemotherapy?
When you hear the word chemotherapy, the thought of side effects such as nausea and vomiting may come to mind. But today, there are many wonderful medications to control these issues. Our team works with you to find the exact combination of medications to make you as comfortable as possible.
How long does chemotherapy take?
Every patient is unique, so the time it takes for chemotherapy varies. On average, you might spend three hours per visit at our office, but it could be shorter or longer depending on your needs. Some patients may receive treatment once a day, once a week, or once a month. Patients generally come in to the office once a week for bloodwork.
Will I lose my hair?
It depends on the treatment. Patients may lose their hair with certain chemotherapy drugs, but this is a temporary situation and it will grow back beautifully. If patients are interested, we can refer them to excellent resources for wigs. We also have volunteers who knit wonderful hats for our patients.
I’m having trouble coping – what can I do?
Our team is available to support every patient, and we encourage you to share any issues you might be having with our nurses and physicians. Support groups, such as those found on our Sources of Support page, also can be a wonderful resource. These groups allow you to share experiences with those in similar situations and help you cope with any challenges.
How can I talk to my children about my diagnosis?
Our nurses and physicians are great resources for questions like these. We also have books available in the office with pointers on talking with your children. In addition, our Sources of Support page provides a number of Web sites with helpful information and interactive groups on family dynamics during cancer treatment.
How will I handle the financial aspect?
Our team will guide you through the process so you can worry less about finances and focus more on your treatment. For more information on this topic, visit our Financial Considerations page.
